Blogs I ❤️: Gurney Journey

Blogs I ❤️ is a series focused on artist blogs worth loving.

Gurney Journey is a blog by James Gurney, the creator of the illustrated book series Dinotopia.

Why you will ❤️ this blog.

It is consistent with daily posts.  That is a huge feat and a personal goal I am far from achieving.

Full of highly detailed and useful information to help readers, particularly for his audience of illustrators, plein-air painters, sketchers, comic artists, animators, art students and writers.  .

He provides engaging content for those who are not artists but consider themselves to be art appreciators.  You will find interesting posts, giving a unique perspective as in John Singer Sargent at San Vigilio.

This sidebar makes it easy to find what interests you.

He produces great videos.

Go check it out.  I think you’ll like it.

Can you Commit to Art Marketing for Fifteen Minutes Every Day?

Many artists understand that maintaining a consistent web presence could help with sales, but feel they don’t have time for a blog. They’d rather be creating.   And, I get that!

Fifteen minutes a day to a web presence.

What if I told you that you could invest fifteen minutes a day in your web presence to see results?   In Blogging for a Visual Art Business, I explain that if you get into a consistent habit of writing and working on your blog, you can maintain a system that eventually can take as little as fifteen minutes of your time every day.

This article by Michael Hyatt explains this concept well. Little bits of progress consistently over time will reap the rewards in the long run.

Invest in your art business.

I’m not going to lie, though. You will need to invest some time on the front end. But, after you build your system, you will be able to maintain your online presence in fifteen minutes a day.

Daily is better than monthly.

Working on your system every day keeps you fresh. It helps you to build momentum. It’s easier than sitting down once a month to update things.

Four Necessary Ingredients

If you are serious about starting and maintaining a blog that will drive your art marketing forward, consider the Artist Blogging Toolbox. This program has all four of the necessary ingredients outlined in the article.

1 – Get Clear on Your Goals

The first action in the Toolbox is to outline the goals you want your artist blog to accomplish for your business.

2 – Identify the Right Behavior

After your blog is set up with your first set of posts, you will learn how to set up a system that includes daily behaviors that work to continue to build your presence.

3 – Track Your Progress

The Artist Blogging Toolbox includes tools you can use to plan out your posts and stay on track with your plan.

4 – Accountability Partner

Perhaps the most significant selling point of the Program: You are not alone!  This is a self-paced program, but it includes points for checking in and one-on-one meeting time between you and me working specifically on your blog.

Positive Habits Make Progress

Fifteen minutes a day of any proactive activity can help your business.  Even if it’s not blogging, try committing fifteen minutes every day to one positive thing you’re already doing to market your work.

If you’d like to set up a fifteen-minute Zoom meeting with me to talk about how the Artist Blogging Toolbox might help you, please drop me a line at becky@artisan-advantage.com.

Would you like weekly updates to help build your art business.  I’d love for you to join my email list.

Blogs I ❤️: Austin Kleon

Blogs I ❤️ is the first post in a long-overdue series focused on artist blogs worth loving.    With Valentine’s Day upon us, I figured it was time to get this going.

First Up: Austin Kleon

In a past blog post, I mentioned that I wanted to do this and asked readers to weigh in with suggestions—hat tip to artist Carol Skinger for the first pick. Austin Kleon’s blog just had to be first in this series. He’s a best-selling author, so you may already be familiar with him. If you’re not, you should be. I’ve read two of his books, Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work.  They are worth reading.

Why you will ❤️ this blog.

Visit his site, and it will be evident why I’m sharing it, but I’ll highlight some of the reasons I love it.

The content is useful, interesting and entertaining all at the same time.

He covers a variety of topics while staying true to his promise of delivering new art, writing, and interesting links.

It’s effective. The layout is simple. I can find what I’m looking for. I want to read more.

He shares a ton of worthy things from books to music and other creatives.

Go check it out. You might lose an afternoon reading, which isn’t a bad thing!

Thank you East Suburban Artists League

I want to thank the East Suburban Artists League for inviting me to present during their member meeting via Zoom last week.

The topic was Building a Dynamic Web Presence.   We discussed how visual artists can use blogging to strategically and systematically promote their work.

This was my first time presenting via Zoom.  I thank the group for allowing me to do that!

While I’d rather meet artists in person, I’m thankful that technology provides a way for these meet-ups and presentations to continue.

Interested in having me present to your group?   Please contact me at becky@artisan-advantage.com.

Coming in September: Blogging for Your Visual Art Business

Free Webinar!  Blogging for Your Visual Art Business

Many creatives are feeling the pain of canceled exhibitions, festivals, and other opportunities due to Covid-19. It’s more important than ever to have a web presence.  Opportunities still exist on the internet.  The key is to prepare and position yourself to take advantage of them.

Some artists, however, find the task of creating and maintaining a website daunting.   They don’t think they have enough technical know-how to build one.  Then, once established, it can be a struggle to get visitors to the site.

My free webinar, Use Blogging to Build Your Visual Art Business,  offers some answers to the following questions:

How to set up a vibrant web presence for your art business in an effective way without hiring a web designer?

How to keep your website up to date without a web designer?

How to reach an audience interested in buying your work with a blog?

Set up a Simple System to Drive Your Art Marketing Efforts

This presentation uses my personal experience and real-life examples to outline a system any visual artists can use.  The information is relevant for many popular web platforms such as WordPress, Weebly, Squarespace, or FASO.  Learn how to consistently share work with an audience across various marketing channels such as social media and email marketing using an easy to use blogging platform as the driver for your business.

My goal is for you to gain a new enthusiasm for building a web presence, whether you are starting from scratch or improving upon an existing website.   I will offer tools and advice for starting and maintaining this system in a manageable way.
