Evaluate and Leverage a Themed Exhibition

Welcome to The Visibility Brief, a series exploring how artists can use real-world opportunities such as exhibitions, grants, and residences to build lasting visibility.

Not every call for artists is worth your time. But some opportunities, when they genuinely align with your work, can do more than add a line to your CV. They can reinforce the story you're building around your practice.

This brief uses a real example, Crafted in the Valley: Contemporary Voices in Appalachia at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, as a case study for thinking strategically about themed exhibitions. Even if this specific show isn't a fit for you, the framework applies to any call for entry you evaluate going forward.

(I am not affiliated with Sweetwater; I selected this exhibition because it provides a good case study for evaluating themed exhibitions)

The Opportunity: Crafted in the Valley

This exhibition highlights contemporary work across all media that illuminates the culture, traditions, and lived experiences of Appalachia.

  • Exhibition dates: April 9 - May 22

  • Application deadline: March 8

  • Application fee: $5

  • Commission: 40% gallery / 60% artist

  • Eligibility: Open to all media; local, regional, and national artists 18+

On the surface, it's widely accessible. But accessibility doesn't make it the right fit; it depends entirely on your work.

Is This Exhibition Right for You?

This could be a meaningful opportunity if you have ties to Appalachia. It's worth considering if:

  • Your work explores identity, regional narrative, or cultural memory

  • You're building credibility in Appalachian or Rust Belt contexts

  • You want nonprofit exhibition credits on your CV

  • You're developing a long-term narrative around place, heritage, or regional influence

Questions Before You Apply

Ask yourself:

Does this theme authentically align with my body of work?

Does this exhibition support where I'm trying to go?

If nothing sells, is this still valuable for my practice and credibility?

If you can answer yes to all three, treat the application as the beginning of a visibility campaign, not just a submission.

If You Apply: Sharpen the Narrative

Revisit your artist statement before you submit. The goal isn't to reshape your work to fit the theme.  The goal is to articulate the connections that already exist. Be specific about why this theme matters to your practice.

Making the Most of an Acceptance

Before the show: Share the news on your website, newsletter, and social channels. Explain why this show matters to your work. In the weeks leading up to opening, post behind-the-scenes content: works in progress, installation prep, and reflections on the theme.

During the show: Invite your community. Consider a short press release to local or regional outlets.

After the show: Write a short recap in a blog post and your email newsletter reflecting on what the experience meant for your practice. Update your CV and website, and be thoughtful about how you describe the work. Follow up with curators, artists, or community members you connected with during the event.

A well-aligned exhibition doesn't lose its usefulness when it closes. It becomes a reference point you can build from.

The Financial Reality

A few practical things to factor in before applying:

A 40% commission is standard for nonprofit arts centers. The $5 fee makes it accessible, which likely means a high volume of submissions.  This is worth keeping in mind when setting expectations around selection. You'll also want to account for shipping, return shipping, and the requirement that work arrives gallery-ready.

The Takeaway

Pursue opportunities that reinforce the narrative you're building around your work.

When theme, positioning, and direction align, even a small regional show becomes a deliberate step in your professional story.
